Australian 4-Day Neurofeedback in a Clinical Practice
This course will give you a thorough grounding in this field and prepare you
for successful clinical implementation of Neurofeedback. The course is very practical,
experiential and 'hands-on'. Sufficient basic neuro-physiology is presented to
allow participants to understand the neurofeedback process and reasoning for protocol
decisions. The class size is kept at a low maximum number of 12 attendees. This
allows catering for individual needs. The aim of this course is for each participant
to achieve a level of competency, sufficient to begin providing EEG Biofeedback
to clients that present with an uncomplicated profile. Supervision is available
and strongly recommended during the initial period of clinical service provision.
Our aim is for course participants to become successful, effective and efficient
Neurofeedback Practitioners.
Australian 2-Day Alpha/Theta
This course offers a comprehensive introduction to Alpha/Theta training protocols. The Alpha/Theta protocol, also commonly referred to as the "Peniston Protocol" (in recognition of the ground-braking published research by Eugene Peniston, achieving an 80% success rate, with 10 year follow-up, in the treatment of alcoholism), is deep state work, mainly applied to address Addictions, PTSD and for Peak Performance. However, combining Alpha-Theta fairly early with Beta-SMR training can, for many clients, accelerate their healing process. Some of the topics covered include: historical development, research history, Alpha/Theta training methodology, clinical applications and an experiential practicum.
Prerequisite: Australian 4-Day Neurofeedback in a Clinical Practice - "Getting Started in Neurofeedback"
Recommendation: The clinician has had ample opportunity to understand the higher frequency training protocols.

Integration of Neurofeedback and Psychotherapy
Instructor: Sebern F. Fisher, MA, BCIAC
Trauma and Recovery: The Integration of Neurofeedback and Psychotherapy
Abstract:Post-traumatic stress disorder is, at its foundation, a disorder of the brain, particularly of the brain's ability to regulate fear. The brain oscillates between high sympathetic arousal as manifest in nightmares, startle responses and aggression and parasympathic under arousal, manifest, at its worst, in dissociation. PTSD is a brain in the grip of fear.Neurofeedback can be used to regulate the fear circuitries in the brain. Regulation of fear may, in fact, be the single most important contribution that neurofeedback makes to the treatment of severe conditions such as PTSD, attachment disorder and personality disorders. This workshop focuses on the integration of neurofeedback and psychotherapy in the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder, both acute and chronic.
The topics covered include:
The role of the psychotherapist once using neurofeedback
The role of neurofeedback in psychotherapeutic treatments
Affect regulation as the corner stone of effective psychotherapy
The role of neurofeedback in the regulation of affect
Fear as the central affect of concern
The neural circuitry of fear
Repressed memory and neurofeedback training
The discovery and use of FPO2: frequency and time considerations
Instructors: Ed Hamlin, Ph.D., Clinical Director of the Center for Advancement of Human Potential and Andrea Meckley, MA
Enrollment is Limited to 15 participants
Course Objective:
An enormous amount of information can be gained by exploring the EEG in-depth. We will examine numerous 19- channel EEG recording to learn what patterns to look for in the raw tracing, how these patterns relate to clinical symptoms, and build a bridge between the patterns seen in the raw EEG and those in quantitative analysis. In doing so we will look at the advantages and disadvantages of various EEG montages and explore the information that can be derived from maps and tables that comprise referenced and non-referenced QEEG approaches. We will explore analysis techniques from several different databases (SKIL, Neuroguide, NxLink) and will present new 1-,2- and 4- channel techniques that can be used in situations where a full-head assessment is not practical. We will also examine the importance of the Posterior Dominant Frequency and how to assess this in quantitative analysis and during a clinical session. Participants will leave with a greater understanding of the raw EEG, how patterns relate to their clients symptoms and what changes to look for during neurofeedback training.
1-Day Course - 7 CE's
4-Day Neuroanatomy and Neurophysiology
Instructor: Harold Burke, Ph.D.
The more you know about neurophysiology and how the brain is organized, the better you'll understand, from a physiological standpoint, the various cognitive, behavioral and emotional problems your patients experience. This helps you apply specific protocols at a more sophisticated level. We will discuss aspects of brain behavior relationships; dimensions of subcortical/cortical connections, left hemisphere vs. right, and anterior vs. posterior. We’ll focus on how different parts of the brain communicate, how the brain is organized and how medications and hormones affect the brain.

Psychopharmacology
Instructor: Harold Burke, Ph.D, BCIAC
This course will introduce you to basic principals of psychopharmacology and will provide the latest information on the major classes of psychotropic drugs. You will learn about (a) specific brain circuits, (b) how specific neurotransmitters are associated with those circuits, and (c) how drugs affect those circuits. You will also learn about how drugs may potentially influence the efficacy and safety of neurofeedback and the effects of drugs on your client's mood, cognition, behavior, and the EEG itself. This will allow you to better understand how your treatment is actually affecting your client and how to work with the prescribing physician to titrate the dose if necessary and to help your client wean off a drug if possible and appropriate. Included will be details about drug side effects, important because you need to know whether effects are due to neurofeedback to durgs, or to a combination.
Specifically, you will learn about:
Electrochemical communication between neurons.
Neurotransmitters and receptors
Specific brain circuits, how their dysfunction may result in psychiatric symptoms, the neurotransmitters associated with those circuits, and how drugs may affect those circuits.
Major classes of psychotropic drugs, including antidepressants, mood stabilizers (i.e., lithium, anticonvulsants, antipsychotics), anxiolytics, drugs to treat ADHD, cognitive enhancers, drugs to treat pain/funtional somatic syndromes (e.g.,fibromyalgia), and drugs that affect sleep and wakefulness.
